On July 6, 2019, the School of Physics and Electronic Science was formed by the former School of Physics and Materials Science, the Department of Electronic Engineering and the Department of Optoelectronics Science of the former School  of Information Science and Technology. The School has a long history since 1951, a strong team of faculty and good scientific researches.

The School is now composed of Department of Physics, Department of Materials, Department of Electronic Science, and State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy. It has four important research laboratories, including State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy, Key Laboratory of Polar Materials and Devices (Ministry of Education), Engineering Research Center for Nanophotonics & Advanced Instrument (Ministry of Education), Shanghai Key Laboratory of Magnetic Resonance. It also has two education centers, including Shanghai Experimental Teaching Center of Physics and Shanghai Li-De-Shu-Ren General Technology Research & Education Center.

The School has two doctoral programs, including physics and electronics. It also has four undergraduate programs, including physics (including physical teaching), electronic science and engineering, materials science and engineering, optoelectronic science and engineering.

Now, the School has 252 faculties and staffs, including 92 professors, 70 associate professors. Among these faculty members, 1 is academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 were the winners of “Yangtze River Scholar Project” issued by the Ministry of Education; 6 were awarded the National Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars, 8 were awarded the National Funds for Excellent Young Scholars; 8 were award by the national “10000-Elite Program”.

The School is carrying on numerous state-level and ministry-level scientific projects. Now, the School is not merely devoted to fundamental science, but also tries to meet the technical demand from society. It adheres to the mission of "building world-class physics & electronics with the root in China", and aims to cultivate outstanding students with professional expertise and all-round development of morality, intelligence, physique and beauty.
