Liver iron concentration (LIC) quantification is indispensable for  the diagnosis and monitoring of treatment for patients undergoing  chronic blood transfusion. Although the LIC can be measured using R2 and  R2* methods, the accuracy and precision is still limited, especially  for high iron concentration. Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM)  has been shown to be effective in quantifying cerebral iron content. In  this study, we show a method which extends QSM from the brain to the  liver. Specifically, we quantify the iron concentration in the liver  tissue by measuring the apparent susceptibility of the vessels in the  liver. Simulation, phantom and in vivo studies show that much higher  accuracy and precision in measuring LIC can be achieved.
